There are three different types of fabrication when it comes to bamboo flooring, each type with a very different look. These types consist of a vertical grain, horizontal grain, or a strand construction. With in these types there are two different ways of manufacturing. With vertical and horizontal the bamboo is cut into long strips and planned down until they are the correct dimension. These strips are compressed back together using a high pressure process with environmentally friendly adhesive.
For the vertical grain bamboo planks, the strips are laid up on end and then compressed together so that your top plank view is of the thin edge of the bamboo strips.
For the horizontal grain bamboo planks, the strips are laid flat in several layers and rows, then compressed together so that your top plank view consists of the wide view of the strip in which you can see the rings of the bamboo plant.
The strand construction is manufactured in a different way in that instead of the bamboo cut into small strips the bamboo it is processed in a way that it can be broken up into strands. These strands are then compressed back together, either with all the same color or the two different natural colors creating a tiger wood look.
These different types of fabrication can be either a solid construction meaning the planks consist entirely of bamboo or they can be an engineered construction meaning the planks have a layer of bamboo on the surface and the rest of the plank is a plywood backing. This is shown in the side view of the strand image.
